Bridgeport, CT – The Sacred Heart Pioneers allowed four runs in the second and three more in the seventh to fall to the Hartford Hawks, 8-4, Tuesday afternoon at Harbor Yard. SHU has now lost their last three non-conference games in falling to 11-15 overall this season and are still 8-4 in the Northeast Conference.
Sophomore starting pitcher Nick Morrissey (Howell, NJ) ran into trouble in the second inning, allowing four runs, three unearned to stake Hartford the 4-0 lead.
In the second, freshman first baseman Victor Sorrento (Monroe Township, NJ) singled to right field to score Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT) from second base to get the Pioneers on the board. Gondek reached on a single through the left side. Senior captain Jonathan Servilla (Fairfield, CT) had an RBI groundout to shortstop to score freshman Jesus Medina (New York, NY) to cut Hartford's lead in half at 4-2.
Hartford would score what would be the game-winning run in the seventh inning on a Ryan Lukack RBI single up the middle to score Brian Estevez to make it 5-2 Hawks.
In the seventh, Sophomore left fielder Billy McDonough (Ballston Spa, NY) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score sophomore Matt Charmello (Rossmoor, CA) to score the Pioneers' third run. Charmello reached on an error. Freshman Sorrento would score the Pioneers' final run of the afternoon on a wild pitch after reaching on a double to center field.
Hartford would score three more in the eighth inning to close out the Pioneers. Walks, wild pitches and a hit by pitch were the main problems for the Pioneers in the allowance of three more insurance runs.
SHU looks to win their third conference series in a row this weekend when they travel to Central Connecticut for a four game series starting Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm.
