Pioneers Drop Season Opener at UL-Lafayette
Lafayette, LA – The Sacred Heart Baseball team dropped their season opener at Louisiana Lafayette, 4-2, Friday night in Lafayette, Louisiana. Sacred Heart was only able to muster three hits with Matt Chamello (Rossmoor, CA) hitting a 2-run homerun in the fifth inning for the Pioneers' only runs. Senior John Murphy (Seymour, CT) notched the other two hits for the Pioneers.
Sacred Heart's best chance to score came in the ninth inning when they couldn't score after loading the bases with no outs. The inning began with a Billy McDonough (Ballston Spa, NY) reaching on an error before senior John Murphy doubled to left, and that was followed by a Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) walk. A strikeout, and two ground outs later and Pioneers fell to 0-1 on the season.
Senior Troy Scribner started on the hill for the Pioneers, pitching 4.1 innings giving up 5 hits and 2 earned runs. Scribner struck out the side in the second inning. From there it was Robbie Maguire (Brooklyn, NY) pitching the final 3.2 innings for the Pioneers, also giving up two earned runs, only on three hits.
UL-Lafayette's Chase Traffica pitched a gem for the Ragin' Cajuns, only giving up two runs on seven innings pitched.
A balanced attack for the Ragin' Cajuns saw four players each knocking in a run.
