Sacred Heart Baseball to Play in Raleigh Regional at NC State in NCAA Tournament
(Fairfield, CT) – The Sacred Heart Pioneer Baseball team, champions of the Northeast Conference for the second straight year, will play in the Raleigh Regional of the NCAA Baseball Tournament at North Carolina State University this weekend, announced Monday afternoon on the NCAA Baseball Tournament Selection Show on ESPNU.
Sacred Heart will be the #4 seed and will play the #1 seed and hosts NC State Wolfpack in Day One of the double-elimination bracket, Friday June 1 at NCSU's Doak Field. NC State finished the season 39-17, earning the #3 seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, where they were knocked out by the North Carolina Tar Heels in an 11-inning battle this past Saturday.
The #2 seed in the bracket is the Vanderbilt Commodores (33-26), runners-up in the Southeastern Conference. They fell in the SCC title game to Mississippi State 3-0 on Sunday. They will take on the #3 seed and champions of the Colonial Athletic Association, the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks (38-21), who beat Delaware 10-8 in the CAA Championship game.
The Pioneers return to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year, earning the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament as repeat champions of the NEC. Last year, SHU played in the Clemson Regional in Clemson, SC, falling to the host Tigers as well as the UConn Huskies. This is Sacred Heart University Baseball's third appearance in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, to go along with their 2006 NEC Championship season that saw them reach the Athens Regional and fall to Georgia and Jacksonville.
Sacred Heart went 11-4 in the final four weekends of the season, including a three-game sweep of the NEC Tournament for the second straight season.
