(Bridgeport, CT) – The Fairfield Stags took down the Sacred Heart Pioneer Baseball team Tuesday afternoon 10-5 in a midweek non-league game at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
Fairfield jumped to a 4-0 lead behind an RBI groundout by Tyler Wosleger in the first, an RBI single by Larry Cornelia in the second, and RBI singles by Ryan Plourde and Sebastian Salvo in the third.
The Pioneers cut their deficit in half in the fourth on a passed ball and an RBI groundout by Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY). The Stags got those two runs back in the fifth on an RBI single by Jakc Giannini and an RBI double by Mark Skrapits. However, SHU came back to cut the Stags lead to one with a three-run fifth. Billy McDonough (Ballston Spa, NY) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to start the rally. John Murphy (Seymour, CT) delivered an RBI triple to center with two outs, followed by an RBI single to right by Dan Perez (Seymour, CT).
However, Kylel Capaldo stifled the Pioneers in four innings of relief, shutting down the Pioneers on two hits with eight strikeouts and no runs to earn the save for starting pitcher Jeremy Soule, who earned the win leaving after five with the lead. Fairfield put the game away with a four-run eighth on an RBI single by Plourde, a bases-loaded walk to Salvo, and a two-run single by Skrapits.
Sacred Heart begins a four-game series against Quinnipiac Friday afternoon in Hamden, CT. Although the game will be played at QU, it will be a home game for SHU, followed by a doubleheader Saturday night at 6:00 pm and single game Sunday at 6:00 pm back at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.
