(Teaneck, NJ) - The Sacred Heart Baseball team split a doubleheader with the Fairleigh Dickenson Knights Saturday afternoon, rebounding from a 2-0 loss with a 6-1 win.
Robbie Maguire (Brooklyn, NY) pitched a complete game to earn his first win of the season in game two, giving up just two hits and one run and finishing the game by retiring the last 11 in a row. The Pioneers gave him the lead for good, breaking a 1-1 tie with a three-run fifth. Matt Charmello (Rossmoor, CA) came through with an RBI double that dropped just fair inside the right field line to give SHU the lead. Charmello came home on an error while advancing to third on a wild pitch, and Rob Griffith brought home another with an RBI single to left.
The Pioneers pushed two more home on an error and RBI double by Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) in the seventh. SHU took the game's first lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY). FDU tied it the next half-inning on an RBI single by Eric Anderson, the last batter to reach base against Maguire for the Knights.
In game one, Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) pitched six strong innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs. However, Joe Borelli outdueled him in shutting out the Pioneers on three hits in a complete game. FDU scored both of its runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Matt Holsman and an RBI single by Patrick McClure.
SHU goes for the series split Sunday at 1:00 pm, with Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) on the mound.
