(Bridgeport, CT) - The Sacred Heart Pioneers knocked 15 hits, but the lost 7-4 in the finale of a four-game series to the CCSU Blue Devils Sunday afternoon.
Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) had four hits, and Conor McEvoy (Watertown, CT) and Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) both had three-hit days. However, the Pioneers stranded 13 runners and missed out on three bases-loaded opportunities.
CCSU opened the scoring with two in the second on a wild pitch and an RBI single by AJ Lowers. JP Sportman launched a solo homerun to left in the third to make it 3-0. Lowers drove in another with a double in the fourth, followed by an RBI single by Josh Ingham.
SHU's comeback bid began in the fourth with a two-out two-run double to right centerfield by Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) in the fourth. The Pioneers cut their deficit to two in the seventh when John Murphy came home on an error. Sacred Heart then loaded the bases with no outs, but did not score again. Lowers gave CCSU insurance with a third RBI hit of the day in the eighth, and Tyler McIntyre drove a solo homerun to right in the ninth to close the scoring.
Ingham, who started at second, earned the save with three innings of relief to close out the game. He relieved Brendyn Karinchak, who did not allow an earned run in 2.1 innings of relief for the win.
The Pioneers split the four-game series with the Blue Devils, and will host Rhode Island in a non-conference game Wednesday, March 21 at 3:30 pm.
