Baseball Splits Doubleheader with CCSU, Wins 8-3 and Loses 7-0

(Bridgeport, CT) - The Sacred Heart Baseball team split a doubleheader with the CCSU Blue Devils Saturday afternoon, winning 8-3 in game one and falling 7-0 in game two at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The Pioneers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first game on a sacrifice fly by Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) and a two-out, two-run single to centerfield by Kenny Byram (Ponte Verde, FL).  SHU added two more in the second on an RBI single by Dan Perez (Seymour, CT) and a run-scoring error. 

CCSU cut its deficit to two runs with a three-run fourth on sacrifice flies by Anthony Turgeon and Josh Ingham, and an RBI by Mike Washburn on a grounder to second that went as an error.  However, the Pioneers regained a five-run lead by pushing three across in the sixth, highlighted by a two-run, pinch-hit single my Matt Charmello (Rossmoor, CA).

Nick Leiningen (Millwood, NY) earned hist first victory with a complete game, giving up two earned runs on four hits in seven innings.

In the second game, the Pioneers made five errors that led to six unearned runs.  Mitch Wells knocked in the first run with an RBI groundout, while the second came in on an error in the first.  The Blue Devils, aided by two SHU errors in the third, pushed two more across on a Turgeon sacrifice fly and RBI base hit for Tyler McIntyre, who also drove in another with a double in the fifth.  Danny Hickey brought home two more with a two-run single. 

Sacred Heart goes for the series win on Sunday at 1:00 pm, with Kody Kerski (Waterbury, CT) on the mound.
