(Bridgeport, CT) - Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) pitched seven shutout innings and Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) hit a three-run homerun as part of a four-run first inning, as the Sacred Heart Baseball team beat the CCSU Blue Devils 9-0 in the home and conference opener for the Pioneers.
Griffith followed a Conor McEvoy (Watertown, CT) sacrifice fly by crushing the first pitch for a towering homerun to left, sending it over the high portective netting beyond the left-field wall in the first. Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) gave SHU another run in the second with an RBI double ot left-centerfield. The Pioneers tacked on three more in the third behind a two-out ralley, including a two-run single for Keaton Flint (Charlton, NY) and an RBI single for Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT).
Eight of the nine Pioneers in the starting line-up got a hit, helping Scribner run away with the lead. He earned his first victory of the year, scattering five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. He fanned the side in order in the second. John Hermanson (Milford, CT) and Liam Rafferty (Westminster, MA) both pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Fans coming to the game are encouraged to arrive early and look for parking in LOT A (first base side of the ballpark), as NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament action will be on goign throughout the day next door at Webster Bank Arena.
