(Tampa, FL) - The Sacred Heart Baseball team was swept in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon by Army, losing 6-2 and 15-6 in Tampa, FL.
In the first game, the Pioneers fell behind on an RBI single by JT Watkins in the first, setting a tone for a big day at the plate for the Black Knight catcher. He hit homeruns in his next two at bats, going deep to the opposite field for a solo shot as part of a two-run third and breaking the game open with a long three-run homerun to left in the fifth.
Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) went 3-4 for SHU, including an RBI single in the eighth.
In the second game, Army jumped to a 7-0 lead in the first behind a grand slam to right by Cody Mertle. He would finish 3-4 with six RBI and two runs scored, including a two-run double in a four-run sixth for Army. Alex Jenson and Kevin McKague both had three hits and an RBI for the Black Knights.
For SHU, Zach Gandee (Woldorf, MD) knocked his first collegiate hit pinch hitting as part of a four-run seventh for SHU. Rocco Gondek (Glastonbury, CT) was the only Pioneer to accumulate mulitple hits in the ballgame.
SHU looks to salvage the final game of the Florida trip, taking on Army once again Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm in the finale of the schools' early-season three-game series.
