(Las Cruces, NM) – Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) hit the Pioneers' first homerun of the season, but the New Mexico State University Aggies beat the Sacred Heart University Baseball team in the 2012 season opener Friday night to kick off a four game series.
Parker Hipp gave the Aggies an early lead with a three-run homerun in the first inning. MNSU added two more in the second, thanks to a couple walks, an error, and an RBI single by Zach Voight.
The Pioneers answered with four in the fourth to cut their deficit to one. Matt Carmello (Rossmoor, CA) drove in his first career run with his first career hit, a double to right field. He then stole third, and Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) delivered him with an RBI single to right. Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) later followed with a bases-loaded infield hit to third, followed by a sacrifice fly to right by Conner McEvoy (Watertown, CT).
Kyle Phillips hit a solo homerun to get a run back for the Aggies in the fourth, which Griffith answered with his first blast of the season, a solo shot in the fifth. That was as close as SHU would get, with the Aggies putting two more up on a bases loaded walk to T. Rust and a sac fly by Robert Lecount. Voight homered to right in the sixth for another NMSU run, and another two came in on a fielder's choice and sac fly in the seventh.
McEvoy came home on a passed ball in the eighth after getting on board with single to round out the scoring.
