(Fairfield, CT) – Sacred Heart University Baseball head coach Nick Giaquinto has announced his four captains for the 2012 season. Leading the Pioneers this year in defense of last season's Northeast Conference championship are Rob Griffith, John Murphy, Troy Scribner, and Hunter Phillips.
Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) led Sacred Heart last year with 44 RBI, 41 runs, and 102 total bases as the clean-up hitter for the conference champs, while starting all 57 games and playing error-free first base. He finished the season third on the team with a .335 batting average.
Murphy (Seymour, CT) played a stellar shortstop while trailing only Griffith with 43 RBI, and persevered through a rocky start to finish the season at an even .300. He saved his best baseball for last, winning the NEC Tournament MVP award by going 5-13 with a homerun, four runs, and five RBI in the three-game NEC Tournament sweep.
Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) led the pitching as SHU's Friday starter, tying for the conference lead with nine wins, including victories in seven consecutive starts culminating with his complete game 10-1 victory over LIU in the first round of the NEC Tournament. He finished the year 9-3 with a 4.55 ERA, and excellent control numbers with 46 strikeouts and 23 walks in 95 innings.
Phillips (Monroe, CT) proved to be one of the Pioneers' best situational and most clutch hitters, leading the team with a .397 average with runners in scoring position and 20 two-out RBI. He also hit .355 with two outs, .488 when leading off an inning, and delivered runners from third with less than two outs 12 out of 16 times. He finished at .325 with 35 RBI and 39 runs.
The Pioneers also released their 2012 season schedule, beginning with a four-game series at New Mexico State University February 24-26. Following that, Sacred Heart travels to Florida for games March 5-8 in Lake Worth, FL against Xavier, Pittsburgh, and Miami (Miami, OH) and March 10-11 in Tampa, FL against Army. Sacred Heart's other big trip will take place April 5-7 Manhattan, KS when the Pioneers take on the Kansas State University Wild Cats.
Conference play begins early for SHU, when the Pioneers host CCSU March 16-18. It culminates with a rematch of last season's NEC Championship game in a home series against the Monmouth Hawks May 10-12. In between, SHU hosts Mount St. Mary's March 23-25 and Quinnipiac April 27-29. SHU travels to FDU March 30-April 1, Bryant April 13-15, LIU April 20-22, and Wagner May 10-12.
Giaquinto enters his 24th season as head coach of the Pioneers. Wayne Mazzoni is back for his six season and Tyler Kavanaugh for his second, while Earl Mathewson rejoins the staff for his fourth season after a year away from the team.
