Pioneers Close Regular Season with 5-4 Win to Sweep Wagner, Tie Program Record with 31st Win
(Bridgeport, CT) – The Sacred Heart Pioneers completed a four-game sweep of the Wagner Seahawks with a 5-4 win Saturday afternoon at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in the regular season finale. With the win, the Pioneers also tied a program record with their 31st win of the season, matching last year's win total.
Hunter Phillips (Monroe, CT) came up with another big hit, tying the game at four in the sixth on a two-out two-run triple to right-centerfield. Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) drove in Dan Perez (Seymour, CT), who singled as a pinch hitter leading off the inning, for the winning run on a groundout in the seventh.
Phillips also delivered SHU's first run on a two-out RBI single in the fourth. He finished the weekend series 9-15 with seven RBI and three runs. Chris Whittemore (Lavellette, NJ) followed Phillips with an RBI single as well, bringing the Pioneers within a run as part of a two-run inning.
Wagner took a 3-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI double by Eddie Brown and a two-run homerun to left by Kevin McDonnell.
John Hermanson (Milford, CT) improved to 6-1 on the season, earning the win with four innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits with a walk and a strikeout. Chris Dionisio (Smithtown, NY) earned his first save with a scoreless ninth inning, stranding the tying run at second and striking out two.
The Pioneers finished the regular season second in the NEC, and will play Long Island University in the Northeast Conference Baseball Tournament at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT on Thursday, May 19 at a time to be determined.
