Griffith and Boisture Go Deep, Scribner Keeps Rolling in 7-4 Win at CCSU
(New Britain, CT) – Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) and Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY) both hit their third homeruns of the season, and Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT) improved to 7-2 on the season with eight strong innings, as the Sacred Heart Pioneers beat the CCSU Blue Devils 7-4 Friday afternoon in the first of a four-game series.
Scribner settled down after giving up three runs in the second on four consecutive hits by Pat Epps, JP Sportman, Sean Miller-Jones, and Anthony Turgeon. He scattered 12 singles over eight innings, with a walk and a strikeout, giving up four runs.
Trailing 3-0 in the fourth, Griffith and John Murphy (Seymour, CT) delivered RBI singles to cut the deficit to one. Then in the sixth, Griffith tied the game with a homerun to left-center to start a four-run sixth. SHU took the lead on a fielder's choice and an error, when Murphy came home on an error by Miller-Jones attempting to turn a double play on Conor McEvoy (Watertown, CT). Boisture hit a two-out two-run homerun to left to make it 6-3.
CCSU scored in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Dylan DelaCruz, but SHU got that run back in the eighth on an RBI double to right-center with two outs by Derick Horn (Valatie, NY).
MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY) relieved Scribner in the ninth, inheriting a runner but eliminating him by inducing the fourth double play of the game turned by the Pioneer infield en route to earning his third save.
The Pioneers are now one game up on CCSU, sitting alone in third place with a conference record of 16-9 and 24-20 overall. The Pioneers take on the Blue Devils in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
