Pioneers Lose in 10 Innings to URI 4-3

(Kingston, RI) – The Sacred Heart Pioneers Baseball team fought back to tie the Rhode Island Rams with a two-run eighth inning, but the Rams won 4-3 in 10 innings on a last at-bat bases-loaded single by Dan Haverstick.

Scoreless through six innings, the Pioneers produced the game's first run on consecutive singles by JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) and Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY), a sacrifice bunt by John Murphy (Seymour, CT), and a sacrifice fly by Dave Boisture (Highland Mills, NY). URI responded with three runs in their half of the seventh, taking advantage of five walks to score the tying run on a groundout and the go-ahead runs on a two-run single by Jeff Cammans.

However, SHU came back to tie in the eighth on back-to-back singles by Jonathan Servilla (Fairfield, CT) and MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY) and consecutive RBI groundouts by Hunter Phillips (Monore, CT) and Edwards.

 Robbie Maguire (Brooklyn, NY) pitched four scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and no walks with two strikeouts in his second start of the year.

The Pioneers travel to Mount St. Mary's for an important four-game NEC series beginning Thursday at 3:00 p.m. EST. SHU is 9-7 in conference games, tied for third in the NEC standings.
