Pioneers Battle Back, But Lose on Wild Pitch
(Starkville, MS) – The Sacred Heart Pioneer Baseball team fought back with five runs in the fifth to take a lead, but he Mississippi State Bulldogs tied the game in the fifth and then scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the eight for a 6-5 win Saturday night at Dudy Noble Field.
Down 4-2 in the fifth, Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) knocked in a run with an RBI single to make it 4-3. He then came around to score along with M.J. Schifano (Monroe, NY) on a fielder's choice and throwing error to give SHU a 5-4 lead. The Bulldogs answered in the bottom half on a game-tying sacrifice fly by C.T. Bradford.
The Bulldogs went ahead in the bottom of the eighth after a single, back-to-back walks, and a wild pitch to send home pinch runner Frazier.
Sacred Heart jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homerun by John Murphy (Seymour, CT), his and the team's first of the season. Mississippi State tied it in the bottom half on Bradford's RBI double and a run-scoring double play. The Bulldogs broke the tie with two in the fourth on a run-scoring wild pitch and an RBI single by Jonathan Ogden.
Tedesco finished 2-4 with two runs, and now has a five-game hitting streak with back-to-back multiple hit games.
The Pioneers close out their three-game series with the Bulldogs and their 11-game southern series tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
