(Hammond, LA) – Chris Whittemore drove home the game-winning runs with a tie-breaking two-run single in the top of the tenth, as the Sacred Heart Pioneer Baseball team beat the Southeastern Louisiana Lions 5-3 to split their four-game series.
Whittemore drove a base hit to right to score Rocco Gondek and Hunter Phillips. Derick Horn started the inning with a lead-off single, followed by Phillips' fielder's choice and Gondek's double to right.
The Lions tied the game with single runs in the fifth and the sixth. Chris Hargas cut the Pioneer lead to 3-2 with an RBI fielder's choice and error in the fifth, and Jeff Harkensee came home with tying run on a passed ball in the sixth.
Sacred Heart jumped to a 3-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Phillips to right-center after Steve Tedsco came home on a passed ball. Whittemore drove in the game's first run on an RBI groundout after back-to-back singles by Phillips and Horn and a sac bunt by Gondek. The Lions tied it in the fourth on an RBI single by C. Couglar.
Chris Dionisio earned the win with five innings of one-hit relief, issuing just one run on four strikeouts and five walks. He followed MJ Schifano, who made his first start on the mound after starting the first six games at third. Whittemore (2-5), making his first start at third, drove in three runs – none bigger than the two on his game-winning extra innings hit.
Sacred Heart plays LSU Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge.
