(Hammond, LA) – The Sacred Heart Pioneer Baseball team began an eight-game southern trip with a 9-8 win over Southeastern Louisiana University Saturday night. Steve Tedesco (Mission Viejo, CA) and MJ Schifano (Monroe, NY) both went 3-4 with a RBI for the Pioneers, while Tedesco also scored two runs.
Tedesco led off the game with a double to left-center and would later score on an RBI groundout by John Murphy (Seymour, CT). SLU came back with two in the bottom of the first on a two-run double by Justin Boudreaux, then added another in the second on an RBI single by Trey Martin.
SHU countered with two in the third when Tedesco came home on a groundout and Rob Griffith (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) tied the game with a double. The Pioneers then went ahead for good, exploding for five runs in the fourth. Tedesco once again started it with a sacrifice fly, followed by consecutive RBI singles by JJ Edwards (Endwell, NY) and Griffith. Derick Horn (Valatie, NY) capped off the inning with a two-run double to make it 8-3 SHU.
After the Pioneers added an unearned run in the sixth, SLU jumped back in the game with a four-run sixth. Boudreaux knocked in two with a single, followed by Jeff Harkensee's two-run single.
While Schifano contributed offensively, he saved his biggest help for the mound in the ninth. With a run already in and the bases loaded, Schifano came on in relief to retire the last two batters on groundouts, stranding the tying and winning runs in scoring position.
Schifano's save preserved the second win in as many starts for Troy Scribner (Washington Depot, CT), who held SLU to three runs on five hits in five innings. He also walked five and struck out five.
The Pioneers play a doubleheader against Southeastern Louisiana tomorrow beginning at 2:00 p.m. EST, making up for their rainout of Friday's originally schedule game.
