SHU's Alison Brosky Earns Spot at IHSA National Championship
FAIRFIELD, CT - The Sacred Heart Equestrian team competed at the IHSA 2013 Zone II Championship hosted by North Shore Equestrian Center in Greenvale, NY on April 7th. By placing first or second in their respective class at the IHSA Zone 2 Region 5 Championship on March 30th, sophomore Alison Brosky and senior Meagan Korolyshun advanced to compete at the IHSA Zone 2 Championship.
The third class of the day was the Individual Novice Equitation over Fences Championship. Representing SHU was Sophomore Alison Brosky (Manhasset, NY) who rode Carson, loaned by LIU Post. Also competing in the same class were riders from St. Joseph's College, Hofstra, Alfred U, Cornell, Cazenovia, University of Guelph, Colgate, Skidmore, and Trinity College. After the initial jumping round, Judge Carolyn Vincent determined no further testing was necessary. The class was pinned and the results were read in reverse order. It was Sacred Heart's 2012 Rookie of the Year that came out in the top spot. By doing so, Brosky became the first pioneer to win the Zone II Novice Fences Championship Class. With that win, Brosky moves on to the IHSA National Championship where she will compete against 15 other athletes representing 8 IHSA Zones from across the country.
Brosky had an additional opportunity for a second win by participating in the Individual Novice Equitation on the Flat Championship Class. Accompanying Brosky in the Individual Novice Equitation on the Flat Championship Class, was senior Meagan Korolyshun (Derby, CT) making her final ride in IHSA competition as a Pioneer. Korolyshun drew "Abby" loaned by Hofstra University and Brosky rode "Nato" loaned by Stony Brook University. The start of the class was delayed while Brosky's mount was brought down to the competition arena from the stables. Once at the gate, Brosky quickly adjusted her stirrups and entered the arena.
Judge Vincent efficiently called the class to order. When the class was reversed for the second direction, Coach Hajdasz requested a re-ride for Korolyshun. The re-ride request was granted and Korolyshun then mounted Tristen, also on loan from Stony Brook University. After competing in both directions, the riders were asked to line up in the center of the arena and the results were read. Out of the 10 riders competing for the coveted 2 spots, Korolyshun placed seventh and Brosky placed fourth. Other riders in the class represented St. Joseph's College, NYU, Alfred University, Cornell University, Saint Lawrence, Cazenovia, and Colgate.
Korolyshun will continue to ride in IHSA Competitions in the Alumni classes. Brosky will compete in the IHSA National Championships on May 2, 2013 in Harrisburg, PA.
Also representing Zone II Region 5 at the National Championships will be Kaitlin Boggio from UCONN competing in Intermediate Fences, Jennifer Dorfman from Trinity College competing in the Cacchione Cup, and Coach Heather Johnson from Post University competing in Alumni Fences.
