SHU's Buchanan Rides at IHSA Western Semifinal
Senior Brian Buchanan (Troy, NY), accompanied by Head Coach Tiffany Hajdasz and Assistant Coach McAllister, travelled to Findlay Ohio to compete in IHSA Western Semi Final Championships hosted by the University of Findlay. Buchanan competed against 13 athletes in the Advanced Horsemanship class.
Riding the second heat, Buchanan drew "Louie" a sorrel gelding. After completing rail work, the competitors were asked to ride a pattern which included technical maneuvers such as halt to lope, simple change on a straight line, lope to halt, 180 deg turn on the haunches, and extended jog. After all 14 athletes had completed their respective heat; the top 8 were called back to test. Buchanan's pattern and railed work impressed the judges and he was called back to test.
After the completion of the random horse draw, he again drew "Louie". After more rail work and completing the earlier pattern a second time, the riders were asked to line up at the far end of the arena. After a lengthy pause before the placings were announced in reverse, Buchanan was awarded fourth place and will be the first Sacred Heart University athlete to compete at IHSA National Championships in western competition.
