The Sacred Heart equestrian team took part in a pair of events last weekend, turning strong performances at the IHSA Western show at UConn and hosting nine teams in their first home show at the River's Edge Farm.
On Saturday October 15, 2010 the Western team travelled to University of Connecticut for their first IHSA horse show of the season. The Pioneers turned in an outstanding performance under the guidance of Western Coach Dawne Wilson earning Reserve High Point Team. SHU got a pair of first place finishes from junior Alyssa Woronik (Salem, CT) and freshman Margret Vogel (S. Acworth, NH).
Sophomore Molly-Kate Carven (Amesbury, MA) and junior Abbie Britton (Hoover, AL) both earned second place finishes. Britton also picked up a third place finish along with junior Brian Buchanan (Troy, NY). Senior Janel Beauregard (Cumberland, RI) brought back a sixth place finish as well.
On Sunday October 17, 2010 the Pioneers hosted their first home show of the season at River's Edge Farm in Bethany, CT with nine programs from across Connecticut in attendance. The Pioneers took home five first place finishes at the IHSA English event. Britton finished as part of a five-way tie for Reserved High Point Rider, earning a first place finish.
In addition to the competition, one of the most entertaining part of the day was no doubt the "Stick Horse Relay Race". Riders and spectators "Cantered for a Cause" around the ring during the show's lunch break with half of the money raised from the event being to donatated to breast cancer research.
