N. SMITHFIELD, RI - Freshman Maile Hetherington (Thousand Oaks, CA) had 15 kills and nine assists, while Brittany Best (Norco, CA) added 11 kills to help the Sacred Heart women's volleyball team defeat Bryant University 3-0 (30-23, 30-22, 30-16) on Tuesday night.
The Pioneers, 7-4, are already just two wins away from tying the school's Division I high set last season at nine.
Bryant took a 12-10 lead in the opening set before the Pioneers got things rolling. SHU ran off eight of the next nine points, four of them on Jessica Colberg serves, to take an 18-13 lead. The Bulldogs had some bite left in them, however. Trailing 23-16, Bryant crawled back within a point at 24-23 but a kill by Best off a Bryant serve secured the game for the Pioneers.
SHU built a 17-9 lead in the second set and again had to hold off a tenacious Bryant team. The Bulldogs closed the score to 24-22 before Ashlyn Trimble (Temecula, CA) took a Courtney Kidd-Kadlubek (Santa Barbara, CA) set and slammed it home for a 2-0 lead.
Set three was tied at 10-10 but Kidd-Kadlubek reeled off six points on her serve and the Pioneers opened up an 18-13 lead and cruised home to the win.
