Women's Volleyball Falls to Fairfield in Four Sets to Close SHU Invitational

FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team fell to in-state rival Fairfield in four sets (25-15, 21-25, 25-27,19-25) to close day two of the SHU Invitational Saturday afternoon. With the loss SHU falls to 4-5, while Fairfield improves to 5-4 on the season.

The Pioneers went 2-1 in the SHU Invitational, with Sarah Ciszek and Reghan Palanchi being named to the All-Tournament team for their play throughout the weekend. The Pioneers return to action Friday, Sept. 20, when SHU travels to New Haven to take on Army West Point in the Yale Invitational at 4:30 p.m.

  • SHU hit .194 for the match

  • Fairfield hit .244 for the match

  • SHU tallied 53 kills and 80 digs in the match

  • Sarah Ciszek tallied a team-high 39 assists

  • Emma Smallcomb registered a game-high 21 digs

  • Jasmine Rogers tallied 12 kills, 19 digs and three blocks which are all career-highs for the freshman

Set 1 - SHU 25, Fairfield 15

  • The two sides played to an early 6-6 tie

  • Fairfield took a 9-6 lead to force a SHU timeout

  • Out of the timeout, SHU went on a 6-1 run capped by two kills from Reghan Palanchi and one from Liisel Nelis

  • Leading 13-10, the Pioneers went on a 5-3 run to take an 18-13 lead, forcing a Fairfield timeout

  • The Pioneers closed the set with a 7-2 run capped by a kill from Jillian Kim

SET 2 - Fairfield 25, SHU 21

  • SHU kept momentum rolling and jumped out to a 7-2 lead to force a timeout from the Stags

  • Out of the timeout, Fairfield came back to cut the SHU lead to 8-7 to force a timeout from the Pioneers

  • Out of the timeout, the Stags went on a 10-5 run to take a commanding 17-13 lead

  • SHU cut it as close as 23-20 but the Stags took the set 25-21

SET 3 - Fairfield 27, SHU 25

  • The two sides played to an early 6-6 set tie

  • With Fairfield leading 13-10, SHU took a timeout

  • Out of the timeout, SHU tied the contest at 13-13

  • The two sides traded points to a 19-19 tie

  • With the score tied at 25-25, a SHU attack error and a Fairfield kill sealed the set for the Stags

SET 4 - Fairfield 25, SHU 19

  • The Stags jumped out to an early 12-6 lead

  • Fairfield took a timeout after SHU cut the deficit to 16-12

  • Out of the timeout, SHU came back to tie the contest at 19-19, capped by a Kathryn Green kill

  • Fairfield responded with a 6-0 run to win the set and match
