BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Sacred Heart women's volleyball freshman Sarah Ciszek was named the NEC Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Year and Setter of the Year, as announced Thursday night during the annual awards show. Ciszek was also named to the All-NEC First Team, along with redshirt-junior Liisel Nelis.
Ciszek, the lone freshman to earn All-NEC First Team honors, played in all 25 matches for the Pioneers this season. Ciszek finished the season totaling 862 assists, 237 digs, 152 kills, 31 blocks and 16 service aces. Ciszek's 9.27 assists per set led the NEC, as well as her .336 hit percentage. During the regular-season, Ciszek was named the Molten/NEC Rookie of the Week five times and Player of the Week once for six total weekly awards.
Nelis' being named to the All-NEC First Team was the first time in her career where she earned All-NEC honors. Nelis played in all 25 games for SHU, totaling 355 kills, which was second-most in the NEC, 241 digs, 57 assists, 31 blocks and 24 service aces. Nelis averaged a league-best 3.82 kills per set and her average of .26 service aces per set ranked in the top-10 in the conference. During the regular-season, Nelis was named the Molten/NEC Player of the Week twice.
The Pioneers will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 16, when SHU travels to take on top-seeded LIU Brooklyn in the semifinals of the NEC Tournament at 3:30 p.m.
