Women's Volleyball Falls to LIU Brooklyn in Five Sets on the Road

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team suffered its second-consecutive conference loss, as the Pioneers fell to LIU Brooklyn (25-21, 19-25, 28-26, 16-25, 9-15) on the road Saturday evening.

Liisel Nelis led Sacred Heart (12-8, 5-4 NEC) with a double-double, registering a game-high 18 kills and 11 digs. Sarah Ciszek added 45 assists and 14 digs in the loss.

First Set: SHU 25-21

- SHU hopped out to a 6-2 lead to open the set

- After LIU cut the SHU lead to 12-11, a Ciszek kill and LIU attack error pushed the Pioneers' lead to 14-11

- The teams traded points to a 20-20 tie

- SHU closed the set taking five of the next six points, with a Rianna McNamee sealing the set win

Second Set: LIU 25-19

- SHU hopped out to a 13-10 lead in the set

- SHU pushed its lead to 15-10 following back-to-back kills from Nelis

- With the set tied at 19-19, the Blackbirds closed the set taking the next six points

Third Set: SHU 28-26

- SHU found itself in an early 15-10 hole

- SHU battled back to tie the set at 15-15, capped by a Nelis kill

- The two teams played to a 20-20 tie

- The teams went back-and-forth to a 25-25 tie in the set

- With SHU trailing 26-25, Nelis recorded a kill to tie the set

- After an attack error from LIU Brooklyn, Alix Polk sealed the set with a kill for the Pioneers

Fourth Set: LIU 25-16

- LIU Brooklyn hopped out to an early 11-2 lead to force a SHU timeout

- Out of the timeout, SHU cut the deficit to 15-9

- LIU Brooklyn pushed its lead to 22-15

- SHU was unable to recover, falling 25-16 in the set

Fifth Set: LIU 15-9

- LIU took an 8-3 lead to open the set

- SHU took the next four points to cut the deficit to 8-7

- Gianna Scioletti, Polk and Nelis all recorded a kill on the run

- It wasn't enough as LIU Brooklyn closed the match with a 7-2 run to take the set and match

SHU hit .129 for the match, while LIU Brooklyn (12-6, 9-0 NEC) had a hit percentage of .174. The Blackbirds registered 75 digs in the match, while SHU recorded 67.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 26, when SHU plays host to Fairleigh Dickinson at 5:00 p.m.
