The pair of Lindsey Post and Katie DeRienzo picked up an opening round victory in the doubles tournament as members of the Sacred Heart University men's and women's tennis programs competed at the ITA Northeast Regionals on Friday and Saturday.
Post and DeRienzo defeated Ali Garrity and Fukamachi of Siena, 8-6, in their opening round match. They went on to drop their second round matchup to Rodgers and Newborn of Syracuse, 8-2. The two now have a team-high three doubles victories together during the fall.
DeRienzo, the lone singles player to compete for the SHU woman, dropped her first round contest 7-5, 6-3, to Sanne Louwers of LIU Brooklyn.
On the men's side, Brian Power and Matt Dean bounced back from an opening round loss to win a consolation matchup over Nicholai Westergaard and Joshua Pompon of Penn, 8-7. The duo fell in their first round contest to Alex Hagermoser and Photos Photiades from Yale, 8-3. With the consolation victory, the tandem picked up their first win together this fall.
Justin Pagan was the only Pioneer from the men's team to participate in the singles tournament. He was defeated by Kial Kaiser of Princeton, 6-0, 6-1, in the opening round.
The Sacred Heart men and women will both wrap up their fall seasons next weekend. The men will travel to Yale University for the Connecticut Invite, while the women head to New Jersey for the NJIT Tournament. Both tournaments run Friday through Sunday.
