SHU Opens Spring Season with 6-1 Loss to NJIT

NEW HAVEN, CT - The Sacred Heart women's tennis team opened the 2012 spring portion of their schedule hosting NJIT at Yale University Saturday night.  The Highlanders, also opening their spring schedule, posted a 6-1 win over the Pioneers.

Sophomore Gabi Kaldan (New Brunswick, NJ) had a pair of victories for the Pioneers, earning their lone point with a singles win at #1 in a three-set battle with Ksenia Kuzmenko.  Kaldan won the first set 7-5 and overcame a 6-0 loss in set two to win the match 7-5 in the third.  She teamed with senior Delaney Downing (Englewood, CO) to win at #2 doubles.  The duo beat Kuzmenko and Hannelore MacDonald 8-5.

SHU freshman Nicole Rydzewski (Maspeth, NY) battled Nina Mayevska in a three-set loss.  Rydzewski won the first set, 6-4, before falling 6-2 and 6-3.

The Pioneers will play a pair of dual matches this weekend at Army in West Point.  SHU will face the Black Knights on Friday and take on Binghamton on Saturday afternoon.
