SHU Swimming Wins First Meet of the Season

DANBURY, CT (January 29, 2010) - The Sacred Heart University swim team coasted to a 120-71 victory at Western Connecticut State Friday evening.  Freshman Juliette Wallerstein (Southbury, CT) came away with first place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly.  In the 50-free, she hit the wall in 25.31 and finished the 100-fly in 1:03.75.


Junior Katie Marshall (Cumberland, RI) and freshman Rachel McGrath (Dorchester, MA) went one, two, in the 100-yard freestyle.  Marshall completed the race in 57.09, while McGrath followed in 58.32.  McGrath also placed second in the 200-free with a time of 2:05.38.


In the 100-yard individual medley, freshman Stephanie Walters (Wanaque, NY) took first place in 1:06.76.  Finishing in second was sophomore teammate Meghan Bailey (Walpole, MA) in 1:08.39.  Bailey also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:19.92.


Sophomore Allison Thurston (Berlin, CT) placed first in the 500-yard freestyle, followed by classmate Laurie Casado (Queens, NY).  Thurston finished in 5:38.22, while Casado hit the wall at 5:49.70.


The Pioneers return to action when they compete in the Northeast Conference Championships at Yale on February 11-13.
