NEW BRITAIN, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Swimming and Diving team completed the final day of competition at the Blue Devil Invite tonight. The team took second out of three teams as Wagner took first with 1842.5 points, SHU in second with 1148.0 points, and host Central Connecticut came in third with 1130.5 points. The Pioneers will return to action on Wednesday Dec. 4 when SHU competes at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships in Atlanta, Ga.
In strokes, senior Lauren Somers took first in the 100 meter freestyle picking up her second win of the meet touching the wall at 52.40. She also placed fifth in the 50 yard breaststroke with a time of 32.18. Meanwhile sophomore Nicole Tingles continued her impressive invite swims with a career best time in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.30 placing seventh in the event. First-year Casey Barrett took first in the B finals in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:12.92 which is a lifetime best for the first-year as fellow first-years Ashley Ayala and Julia Brezezinski followed with a time of 2:14.14 and 2:14.93. Sophomore Taylor Eck rounded out the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:15.52 as she placed fourth in the B final.
Into the long distance swims, junior Margaret Flaherty took fourth in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 18.18:31 followed by first-year Jillian Pusateri touching the wall at 18:40.76 to take fifth in the event.
In the diving events sophomore Molly Martin swept the board by taking first in the 3 meter dive with a score of 218.75 while sophomore Megan McLaughlin followed right behind in second with a score of 182.10.
