Fairfield, CT – The Sacred Heart women's swim team start their 2012-13 season on Saturday at Iona. The season sparks a new beginning for the Pioneers with new Head Coach Brent Noble taking the reins. The Pioneers are hoping to bounce back from a tough season last year and start this season off strong.
"With a great group of returners and very talented newcomers, we have the ability to be far and away the best team Sacred Heart has had this year," Coach Noble commented. "Everyone is doing a great job of transitioning to a new coaching style, and we are right where we need to be regarding our training and preparation."
The Pioneers return eight players from last season, including team captains seniors Stephanie Walters (Wanaque, NJ) and Rachel McGrath (Dorchester, MA). Sacred Heart came in sixth place at the NEC Championships last spring. McGrath was part of a 200 Medley Relay team that set a new school record on the first day of preliminaries, swimming the event in 1:51.97. Walters took home ninth place in the 200 backstroke at the NEC championships, as well as seventh place in the 100 yard breaststroke. Junior Liz Bennett (Fairbanks, AK) finished in 15th place in the 200 yard backstroke and sophomore Malvina Reinhold (Gothenburg, Sweden) grabbed 11th place in the 100 yard breaststroke. Junior Hayley McGill (Old Lyme, CT) also placed at last Years NEC Championships, grabbing 14th place in the 100 backstroke.
"We have a great core of leadership that held the team together between coaches, and I couldn't be more excited about the future of Sacred Heart swimming," Noble said.
