SHU Softball's Season Comes To Close At NEC Tournament

LORETTO, Pa.— The Sacred Heart University softball team had its season come to a close on Friday, falling in a pair of contested games at the 2018 Northeast Conference tournament. 

The Pioneers (31-25) led early in game one against Saint Francis U (38-17) but the top-seeded Red Flash rallied late to take game one 9-7. The Blackbirds (22-28) used a five-run fourth inning to take the lead before a late SHU rally fell just short with a final of 5-4 in game two.

Game One - Saint Francis 9, SHU 7

The Scoring… 

Top of the 1st inning… The Pioneers opened the game with its first two batters reaching base on a single and an error. Kelyn Fillmore stepped up to the plate and delivered at RBI single to right field to get SHU on the board. After another single, Katelyn Christian was hit by a pitch to bring the score to 2-0.

Bottom of the 1st inning… The Red Flash worked the bases loaded to start the game and Sierra McKee picked up the RBI walk against Kristen McCann. A RBI fielder's choice knotted the game up at 2-2 for SHU. A missed throw by SHU on the SFU steal attempt allowed the home team to take the 3-2 lead.

Top of the 2nd inning… SHU put runners on first and second with one out to set up Fillmore to line the double to left center to tie the game at 3-3. Fallon Bevino continued her strong tournament with a two-RBI double to right field to put SHU ahead 5-3. Katelyn Christian followed that up with a two-run shot over the wall in left-center field for the 7-3 lead.

Bottom of the 5th inning… The Red Flash had runners on first and second with two outs before Taylor Hoover put a two-run double to the gap in right-center to bring the score to 7-5.

Bottom of the 6th inning… SFU continued to get on early in the inning with a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with one out. Sierra McKee got a hold of a 3-2 pitch against Emily Orosco to give the Red Flash the 9-7 lead.


The Numbers…

  • SHU outhit Saint Francis 11-9 in the game with three batters recording multiple hits.
  • Bevino paced the lineup with three hits while Christian added three runs batted in.


Game Two – LIU Brooklyn 5, SHU 4

The Scoring… 

Bottom of the 2nd inning… The Pioneers had runners on second and third with two outs as freshman Kylee Harvey lined a RBI single into the hole at second base to give SHU the 1-0 lead. 

Top of the 4th inning… The Blackbirds recorded five runs on four hits in the inning as bases loaded hitting with one out brought home three runs credited to Emily Orosco before Patricia Griffin sealed the inning with a two-run double to right center field for the 5-1 lead.

Bottom of the 6th inning... SHU had runners on second and third with one out for Delgadillo as she delivered a RBI single through the left side to cut the deficit to three.

Bottom of the 7th inning… Harvey led off the Pioneers final inning with a double to right field. Hailey Desrosiers continued her power display with a home run over the center field fence to cut the deficit to one. The Blackbirds recorded three straight outs to end the game. 

The Numbers…

  • The Pioneers were outhit 10-8 in the second game.
  • Delgadillo and Fillmore led SHU with two hits each.
  • Desrosiers home run was her ninth of the season and brought her season RBI total to 27. 

The Pioneers end the 2018 season with a new program record for wins in a season at the division one level, going 31-25 on the season.
