Pioneers End Regular Season With Doubleheader Split At Mount

EMMITSBURG, Md.—The Sacred Heart University softball team ended the regular season with a doubleheader split at Mount St. Mary's on Monday. The series was postponed from Sunday due to rain as the Mountaineers (17-26-1, 7-9 NEC) won 1-0 in game one before the Pioneer (30-23, 10-6 NEC) offense came around in the 4-1 win in game two.

SHU finishes the regular season at 30-23, a new program high in wins at the Division I level. The Pioneers also advance to the program's fourth Northeast Conference tournament and the first time in back-to-back seasons.

Game One – Mount 1, SHU 0.

The Scoring… 

Bottom of the 3rd inning… The Mountaineers recorded a walk and single with one out to put runners on second and third. A sacrifice bunt by Shea McFarland allowed the games lone run to score.

Game Two - SHU 4, MOUNT 1

The Scoring…

Top of the 1st inning… Desrosiers got the Pioneers on the board with a leadoff home run to left center field.

Bottom of the 2nd inning… The Mountaineers tied up the game in the second on a leadoff home run by Morgan Ruf. 

Top of the 6th inning… SHU picked up runners on first and second with one out for Desrosiers at the top of the lineup. The shortstop lifted the deep fly ball over the fence in right field for her second home run of the game and the 4-1 lead for SHU.

The Numbers…

  • Desrosiers led the lineup with her two home runs, while the top of the order contributed five of the six hits in game two.
  • Emily Orosco pitched the complete game, allowing four hits to one earned run. She fanned 11 batters in the game.

Noteworthy…

  • Desrosiers recorded her team-leading 16th multi-hit game of the season and reached the 50-hit total for the year. Her seven home runs and 22 RBI lead the team as well.
  • Orosco recorded her eighth double-digit strikeout outing of the season with the 12th complete game on the year.
  • The Pioneers 30 wins surpass the 29 win season set by the 2011 team that went on to capture the schools second Northeast Conference Championship.

The Pioneers head to Loretto for the 2018 Northeast Conference Softball Tournament May 10-12. SHU will enter the weekend as the three-seed and meet in-state rival CCSU on Thursday afternoon.
