Justine Sibthorp (Santa Clarita, Calif.) had the hot bat in the home-opener, going 4-for-7 from the plate with a triple and four RBI. The Pioneers improve to 12-8 on the season heading into Sunday's matchup with UConn.

Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) got the win after pitching a complete game in the 4-1 win over the Gaels in the first game of the day. In seven innings, the senior gave up one run on just two hits. Iona's only run came on Allison Hand's solo shot to left that hit the foul pole in the fourth inning.

The Pioneers put their first run on the board in the bottom of the first. Annie Dreher (Saugus, Calif.) reached on a fielders' choice before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Sibthorp knocked her in with a single for her first RBI of the day. Melissa Tobin (Hudson, Mass.) put another run up for SHU in the second knocking in Nicki Surkes (Brightwaters, N.Y.). Tobin and Sidor crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth to give Sacred Heart a 4-1 lead.

The Gaels only got one run off Kacie Wentworth (Canton, N.Y.) in the second game. Beth Kann launched a homerun to left field in the top of the first. After that, Wentworth only four hits though five innings as the Pioneers' monstrous 10-run third innings gave them the 11-1 win.

Sidor hit a leadoff homerun for the Pioneers to even the score at one where it stayed until Sacred Heart opened the flood gates in the third. The Pioneers picked up eight hits in the inning and 14 players reached base. Sidor and Sibthorp led the game, collecting three RBI each.
