Pioneers Drop Season Opener 5-2 to Charlotte

Charlotte, N.C. (February 22, 2013)—The Sacred Heart Softball Team dropped the season opener Thursday afternoon 5-2 to the UNC Charlotte 49ers in the UNC Charlotte Tournament. 2012 All-NEC Second Team member Jade Bowins (Frederick, Md.) went 2-for-3 in the game picking up the first RBI of the game.

Down by one run in the fifth inning, senior Melissa Tobin (Hudson, Mass.) walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on Jenn Robillard's (Plainville, Mass.) double. One batter later, Bowins knocked Tobin in with a bunt, evening the score. Catcher Annie Dreher (Saugus, Calif.) put the Pioneers ahead with a single to right field scoring Robillard. 

The 49ers held SHU scoreless for the rest of the game, as they went on to score four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

In her first start of the year, Nicole Sidor (West Vancouver, BC) threw 4.2 innings giving up all five of Charlotte's run on seven hits, including two homeruns. The senior struck out six and only walked one.

Taylor Lane (Lisbon, Conn.) came in in relief of Sidor in the bottom of the fifth to face one batter. She pitched 1.1 perfect innings, recording one strike out.

The Pioneers will take the day off tomorrow due to impending rain in the Charlotte area, and will resume play in the tournament Saturday.
