Sambuco Records Five Saves and holds Brown to one goal as SHU falls 1-0 to Bears

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Soccer team (0-4-0 overall, 0-0 NEC) fell to Brown (1-2-0 overall, 0-0 Ivy League) tonight 1-0. Senior Nicole Sambuco was the highlight of the Pioneers performance as she recorded a total of five saves while allowing just one goal. The team returns home on Monday, September 3 as they host UMASS Lowell. Game-time is set for 3:00 p.m. 

Brown would get the game going as the Bears put up four shots in the first five minutes but all were either saved by senior goalie Nicole Sambuco or blocked by the Pioneer defense. SHU would be able to fire off its first shot of the game courtesy of Christina Palanza at the 26:54 minute mark off a corner kick by Lindsay Corallo but the shot would go wide. SHU would take one more shot in the first half but the shot would be unable to find the net at the 28:15 mark. In the final seconds of the first half, Brown would be able to get a shot passed Sambuco at 44:34 to give Brown a 1-0 lead to close the first half. SHU was outshot by Brown two shots to 15. 

The Pioneers would be able to start the second half with a chance to score off a corner kick by Lindsay Corallo at the 48:01 minute mark but would be unable to find the net keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of Brown. The Pioneers would held tightly by the Bears defense as the Brown stronghold would only allow SHU a single shot in the second half. Meanwhile, Brown would attempt nine shots including one on goal but would be either saved by Nicole Sambuco who continued to have a strong night would close her night with a total of five saves on 24 shots faced. After the ninety minutes concluded, SHU would fall to Brown 1-0 as the Brown defense would be able to hold off the Pioneer offense.

  • Brown stronghold would only allow SHU a single shot in the second half.
