Chelsea Wagner Named Division I Defensive Player of the Week

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (April 6, 2010) - Sacred Heart senior Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) was named the Division I Defensive Player of the Week announced on Monday. Wagner is the first Pioneer in program history to be honored by with a Player of the Week nod.

Wagner turned in a total of 24 saves while allowing just 12 goals in wins over Mount St. Mary's and Monmouth last week. Wagner turned in 11 saves, two in overtime, to preserve a 9-7 win. Wagner and the defense kept the Mount off the scoreboard for the last 15:36 of regulation and all of overtime on the way to their fifth-straight win. In addition, she added a pair of caused turnovers and ground balls in the win.

In Saturday's match-up with Monmouth, Wagner helped key the win making 10 of her 13 saves in the second half while allowing just two second half goals in an 8-5 win. Wagner turned away six MU free position attempts and also had four ground balls and a caused turnover in the victory. Wagner kept the Hawks off the scoreboard for the final 21 minutes of the second half to help lead SHU to the win.

The senior keeper has not allowed more the eight goals in any Northeast Conference game this season and sports a stingy 5.70 goals against average against conference opponents. Wagner lowered her league leading goals against average to 8.44 after the two wins. She currently leads the nation in save percentage at .579 and is fourth in saves per game (11.0).
