Joining the staff in July 2018, Emily Poelma enters her second season with the Pioneers, serving as an assistant coach with responsibilities that include working primarily with the goalkeepers in addition to being the coordinator of the team's social media, alumnae relations and travel.
Among her many daily responsibilities with SHU include conducting individual skill sessions for team attackers and goalkeepers, assisting the head coach in team strategy and game management, working with the recruiting coordinator in the recruitment of prospective student-athletes, managing equipment and creating the team schedule.
As a former goalkeeper herself, Poelma primarily works with the Pioneer goalkeepers and creats individualized training plans for the team's goalies.
Her experience as a player started with James Madison as she played in Virginia for four years (2013-17) before playing a fifth-year with Jacksonville University (2018). Poelma served as the starting goalkeeper for James Madison in 2016-17, starting 21 games and earning VASID Second Team All-State honors as well as CAA All-Tournament Team laurels.
Poelma first delved into the coaching ranks as a camp counselor at Laxology Lacrosse Camps from 2014-18. She also assisted with the Jacksonville Lacrosse Camp as the goalie director in 2018, was an assistant coach for Relentless Hustle Lacrosse Club from 2017-18 and is currently an assistant for the Connecticut Grizzlies Lacrosse Club.
She graduated from James Madison in May 2017 with a bachelor's of science in health administration and later achieved an MBA with a concentration in marketing from Jacksonville in June 2018.
