Five Pioneers, Women’s Lacrosse Team Earn IWLCA Academic Honors

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team earned a spot among the nation's elite academically, as the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) honored the Pioneers as an Academic Honor Squad. In addition, five Pioneers including recent graduates Olivia Mittleman, Hanna Wise, Carrie Speicher and Blair Yesko as well as rising senior Elizabeth Small were announced among the 509 student-athletes selected to the IWLCA Division I Academic Honor Roll.

For a team to qualify for the Academic Honor Squad, it must have posted a 3.0 or higher team GPA for the 2018-19 academic calendar year. Individual honor roll selections are awarded to juniors, seniors or graduate students who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Combining for a 3.51 GPA, the women's lacrosse team had an impressive year inside the classroom, with 23 out its 29 members receiving Northeast Conference Spring Academic Honor Roll distinction for earning a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or higher. In addition, five of those student-athletes were named to the Commission's Honor Roll (3.75+ GPA) including Mittleman, Meredith Oakley, Caroline Wax, Mariah Daley, Casey Hannon.

For the combination of graduated seniors Mittleman, Wise, Speicher and Yesko, this marks the second straight season in which they all received IWLCA Academic Honor Roll status. Mittleman finished her academic career with a 3.975 GPA while majoring in communications. She also received the prestigious SHU Don Cooley Award handed to a graduating communications major who shined within the field as an undergrad. Wise (3.744 GPA, criminal justice), Speicher (3.637 GPA, psychology/elementary education) and Yesko (3.734 GPA, chemistry/biology) all graduated from SHU in May with bachelor's degrees. Small (3.521 GPA, accounting) is entering her senior season at SHU in 2019-20.
