Lydia Werlau Doubles Up, Winning NEC Co-Player and Rookie of the Week Honors

SOMERSET, N.J. – Sacred Heart women's lacrosse freshman Lydia Werlau doubled up, taking home NEC Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. Werlau is now a three-time NEC Rookie of the Week while also becoming the first Pioneer honored with Player of the Week honors since Caitlin Delaney back in 2017. Werlau's three NEC Rookie of the Week honors leads the conference.

Werlau's first career Player of the Week is well-deserved as the rookie posted a program record and NCAA-leading nine goals in Sunday's 16-15 overtime loss at LIU Brooklyn. She is now tied with six other players for the highest single-game goal total in NCAA Div. I play this season while she shares the lead with players hailing from national powers Louisville, Northwestern and UMass.

Her nine goals passed a SHU program record that had stood since the 2012 campaign while her nine points are tied for the fifth-most in a single-game in program history and set a SHU freshman record. Werlau's 31 goals this season moves her to just two goals away from setting the SHU all-time freshman single-season record. The rookie went 5-for-5 on free position attempts while also scoring three unassisted tallies as she racked up 15 shots (12 on-target) in her tremendous individual effort.

Werlau and the Pioneers are back in action with the final two home games of the 2019 season, hosting Robert Morris on Thursday (3 PM) and Saint Francis U on Saturday (1 PM).
