SHELTON, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team defeated New England College by a final score of 3-1 this afternoon to complete the weekend sweep. The team will return to action on Friday Nov. 30 when the Pioneers travel to begin a home-at-home matchup with Becker College. Game-time is set for 7:05 p.m.
The Pioneers would not let the first period go unscored as in the closing seconds of the first junior Jayne Lewis would continue to be the teams leading goal scorer as she netted a goal at 19:53 off an assist by Anna Klein to give SHU a 1-0 lead after one. The Pioneers tallied 22 shots in the period while a strong a defensive front by SHU held the Pilgrims to just two shots.
SHU would not let the scoring stop there as in the second period less than halfway into the period Lewis would tally her second goal of the game this time coming off assists by Kelly Solak and Savannah Hersey at 7:36 to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. The Pilgrims would not back down though as just a few minutes later at 11:01 Cortney Reyes would score her first goal of the season to cut the Pioneer lead to just one. But SHU would want to extend that lead before the end of the period as Olivia Bryant nailed a shot passed the netminder off the sticks of Lewis and Katie Stueve to give the Pioneers the 3-1 lead at 11:26.
Neither team would score in the third period giving the Pioneers the eventual 3-1 victory completing the weekend sweep of the Pilgrims and earning SHU it's ninth win of the season.
