SHELTON, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team (1-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 NEWHA) earned the team's first win of the season as they defeated Post University (0-1-0 overall, 0-1-0 NEWHA) 6-0 on Friday afternoon. The team returns to action tomorrow when they head to Post to wrap up it home at home matchup. Game-time is set for 7:00 p.m. Five of the six SHU goals were scored by different individuals throughout the game.
The Pioneers would score the lone goal in the first period as Victoria Grimmer would find the back of the net to give the Pioneers an early 1-0 at 18:53. The Pioneers defense would hold strong in the opening period as they held post to just one shot the entire first period while SHU tallied 26 shots in the first.
The SHU offense would get hot in the second period as the Pioneers would tally three total goals just in the second period. The first came off an assist by Julianna Lynch at 16:29 to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Just one minute and forty-six seconds later Haley Payne would score her first goal of the season off assists by Jayne Lewis and Samantha Shoebottom to put the Pioneers ahead 3-0 at 17:46. The SHU offense would conclude the second with one more goal courtesy of Lewis off assists by Payne and Kelly Solak at 18:09 to make the score at the end of two 4-0.
Freshman Samantha Shoebottom would kick off the third period with an early goal at 8:24 off assists by Savannah Hersey and Haley Payne to put the Pioneers ahead 5-0. Victoria Grimmer would end the game just as she started with a goal this time at 13:21 off assists by Lexi Edwards and Shoebottom to make the final score of the game 6-0.
