HAMDEN, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team suffered a 5-0 loss at intrastate rival Quinnipiac, Sunday afternoon. Freshman goaltender surpassed 45 saves for the second time this season by making 48 in just her third collegiate start.
The Pioneers have dropped each of their first three games so far, while the Bobcats have raced out to a 4-0 start.
Early goals in each of the three periods spelled trouble for Sacred Heart. Freshman Erica Uden Johansson lit the lamp only 2:29 into the first period and 2:56 into the second for QU's first two goals. One minute into the third, sophomore Brittany Lyons put the Bobcats up 3-0.
For the game, Quinnipiac outshot Sacred Heart 53-13. Senior forward Lauren Fontaine (Windsor, Ont.) put three shots on the cage for the Pioneers.
The Sacred Heart penalty kill was a perfect four-for-four as they hung tough with the Bobcats all afternoon.
Sophomore goaltender Victoria Vigilanti stopped all 13 shots she faced to earn the shutout.
The Pioneers return to action at Union on Friday October 15 at 7:00 pm.
