Welch Captures Individual Crown At SHU Fall Classic

The Sacred Heart University women's golf team finished in third place at the 2019 SHU Fall Classic at Great River Golf Club. Pioneers first-year Kailee Welch shot a 36-hole score of 149 to capture the individual crown.

The event concluded the fall schedule for the SHU women's golf team.

The Individual Chase

  • Welch played one-under on the back nine, to card a 74, and capture the event by one stroke
  • Sunday's leader, Maria Loza, Hartford, shot 77 on Monday for a 36-hole score of 150
  • Lara Yeung, Hartford, placed third, moving up three spots Monday, to finish at 155
  • Pinya Pipatjarasgit and Roshannah Gaur, both from Brown, placed in a tie for fourth with 36-hole scores of 157

The Team Chase

  • Hartford rode an opening round 304 to the team crown, finishing at 625, six strokes in front of Brown
  • The Bears shot 312-319 for the event
  • SHU was a stroke better on Monday, shooting 316, to finish third
  • Hofstra placed fourth at 646, with Merrimack at 656 in fifth-place
  • Long Island shot 678 for the weekend, for sixth place and Fairfield placed seventh at 728

Pioneer Notes

  • Welch carded 75-74 to capture her first collegiate individual title, with a +5
  • Ana Contreras shot 79 on Monday, two strokes better than the opening round and finished ninth at 160
  • Christina Massei shot 83 and tied for 11th with teammate Maya Isom, with scores of 162
  • Isom shot 80 on Monday, two strokes better than her opening round
  • Chelsea Thakkar improved by one stroke on Monday, finishing at 167, in a tie for 24th place, while Cora Koproski placed 44th with a 36-hole of 202
