FAIRFIELD, CT - Melanie Leo scored the game-winning goal with just over two minutes to play as the Fairfield University field hockey team squeaked by Sacred Heart 2-1 Friday afternoon.
Marit Westenberg got the scoring started for the Stags at the 10:04 mark with an unassisted goal. It would stay that way until Lindsay Kasten (Fair Haven, NJ) tied it Sacred Heart with an assist from Stephanie Fazio at 26:29. Fairfield outshot the Pioneers 8-1 in the first half.
Leo's winner came off a rebound that she pushed past SHU goalie Kim Stow (Norwalk, CT).
The Pioneers, now 0-5, will be back in action at home on Sunday at 2:30 against Bucknell.
