Pioneers Fall to Fairfield in Overtime, 2-1

FAIRFIELD, CT (September 20, 2013) - Fairfield's Julie de Paeuw buried a penalty stroke with 52 seconds left in overtime to lift the Stags over Sacred Heart 2-1 Friday night on Campus Field.  The Pioneers fall to 3-4 with the loss while Fairfield improves to 5-2.

A defensive minded first half saw a just a combined three shots as the two teams played to a scoreless tie over the first 35 minutes.  The Stags got a pair of shots through but SHU goalkeeper Mary Altepeter (Chesterfield, MO) turned away both.

The Pioneers broke the scoreless tie in the 47th minute as r-sophomore Liz Bergman (Blandon, PA) ripped a shot past Fairfield goalkeeper Caitliin Bennett from the top right.  Sophomore Rachel Claroni set up Bergman for the assist.

The Stags responded right back just over three minutes later as Christy Starsinic cleaned up a loose ball right at the goal mouth after a scrum.  The Stags got a pair of shots in the 61st and 62nd minute through but Altepeter came up with the stops.

In overtime, Hillary Fitts blasted a shot but the Pioneers got a defensive team save with Nichole Dobachesky (Medway, MA) making the stop.  The Stags earned a penalty corner with just over a minute left but Fitts shot was blocked.  The Stags were rewarded a penalty stroke off the blocked shot and de Paeuw stepped up and put it home for the win.

The Pioneers are back in action next weekend with road games at Albany and Temple.
