Fencing Hosts Tradition Tournament Sunday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart men's and women's fencing teams hosted the annual Tradition Tournament Sunday at the Pitt Center.


Women's Recap 

The SHU women's fencing team opened Sunday with a 24-3 loss to Princeton. Samantha Abbott, Bailey Partridge, and Julia Greene each won a bout in the opening round of competition. The Pioneers bounced back in the next round with a 17-10 win over Vassar. The sabre squad of Greene, Mackenna Lamphere, and Hasoni Austin won all nine of its bouts as Abbott and Gianna DiMartino added four wins in epee.

Following the win over Vassar, SHU lost to Harvard and Penn State by matching 23-4 scores.  In round five, the Pioneers fell to Temple 22-5.  SHU closed the day with a 19-8 loss to NYU. The Pioneers' foil squad of Partridge, Julia Cupolo, and Gabrielle Petrie won four bouts against NYU.


Men's Recap

The Sacred Heart men's fencing team opened its day with a 23-4 loss to Princeton. Senior Cody Richard won two of his four epee bouts in the opening match against the Tigers. In the second round, the Pioneers fell to Vassar 16-11. The foil squad of James Turner, Julian Mallet, and Tyler Endee earned six points for the Pioneers in the match.

In the third round, SHU lost 19-8 to Harvard. The epee squad of Richard, Dante Centeno, and James Hosey won five bouts. SHU followed that with a 23-4 loss to Penn State. The epee squad delivered five bout wins in the fifth round against NJIT, but the Highlanders won the match 20-7. SHU closed the day with a close 15-12 loss to NYU. The Pioneers won six bouts in both epee and foil, but NYU swept sabre to win the match.

The Pioneers are back in action on Jan. 21, 2017 at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by Penn.
