Bowling Places Fourth at UMES Hawk Classic

The Sacred Heart University bowling team placed fourth at the 2019 UMES Hawk Classic. The Pioneers went 8-5 during the three-day tournament and are 19-17 on the season.

The Pioneers posted two victories over NTCA Top-5 ranked teams, defeating top-ranked Vanderbilt 4-2 Sunday in a Baker best of 7, and fifth-ranked Sam Houston State, 997-941 on Saturday.

SHU entered Sunday bracket play in third place and opened the Baker matches with the 4-2 win over the Commodores. SHU won a close fought 218-216 to begin the match, and then cruised to a 214-190 win for the 2-0 advantage. Vanderbilt notched a 266-246 win in the third. SHU won the fourth (227-200) and the sixth (218-195) to earn the win.

The second match on Sunday was a rematch with the NTCA fifth-ranked team, Sam Houston State. SHU won the second and third matches; 211-201 and 196-182, to take a 2-1 lead. After falling in the fourth, 169-147, SHU took a 3-2 lead by winning 199-192. Sam Houston had the top-score of the match, 236-138 to even the match and then won 211-171 to earn the win.

In the third place match, the Pioneers faced-off with an NEC rival, Duqesne. The Dukes opened with two straight wings, 201-183 and 163-157. SHU broke through in the third, with an 183-158 win, before falling 203-163. SHU rallied with consecutive victories, 201-170 and 189-179 to draw even, 3-3 Duqesne put up a 245 in the seventh, dropping the Pioneers.
