FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's bowling team was picked to finish second in the NEC Bowling Preseason Coaches' Poll, released by the league on Wednesday.
The Pioneers were 13-5 in league play last season on their way to a third consecutive regular season title. In last season's NEC Championship match, SHU fell to Saint Francis (PA.) in seven games, falling 205-155 in the deciding game.
Saint Francis U was picked as the preseason favorite by the league's head coaches, topping the poll with three first-place votes. SHU picked up three first-place votes, with FDU garnering the final first-place vote to take the third slot. LIU Brooklyn, Duquesne, St. Francis Brooklyn, and Mount St. Mary's round out the poll.
Despite being picked by the league to finish second, SHU was ranked No. 12 in the National Tenpin Coaches Association in the 2018-19 Preseason Poll. The only NEC ranked ahead of the Pioneers in the poll was Fairleigh Dickinson, who was slotted into the ninth spot.
Sacred Heart opens the season on Saturday, Oct. 20, when the Pioneers host the SHU Bowl for the Cure in East Haven, Conn.
