The Sacred Heart University bowling team went 1-1 on the opening day of the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championship in Lincoln, Neb.
The tournament opens with each of the 16 qualified teams bowling 24 baker matches, with total pinfall determining the seeding of the double-elimination match-play. The Pioneers accumulated 4,435 pins in qualifying. The Pioneers tallied 2,231 in the first block, leaving them 12th, with a high score of 212 in the fourth match. The Pioneers totalled 2,204 points in the second block, with a 223 in game 20 and a 221 in game 24 to secure the 11th seed.
The Pioneers faced sixth-seeded Grand View in the first round of action on Thursday. SHU captured a 4-1 victory in that match. The Pioneers oprned with a 224-193 win in the opening match, before falling 190-157 in the second. SHU rattled off three straight wins to capture the vicotry, winning 213-185, 198-187 and 214-199.
SHU advanced to face third-seeded Wichita State, and fell 4-0 in the second round Thursday evening. The Shockers bowled games of 227, 213, 205 and 236 to defeat the Pioneers, who didnt eclipse 180 in a game.
The Pioneers will bowl Friday morning at 9:45 am central time in match 19, versus the winner of the match between Newman and William Penn. SHU will need to win three consecutive matches on Friday to remain alive for the tournament crown, which is decided on Saturday.
