FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart women's basketball team will be headed abroad for the trip of a lifetime on Saturday, marking the beginning of the team's second-ever international tour. The team will embark on a journey to Buenos Aires, Argentina from August 12-22, which will feature four games, including two against the Argentinian National Team.
"Our team is so excited to travel to Buenos Aires, Argentina to compete in a foreign tour," said head coach Jessica Mannetti. "This opportunity came to fruition through the generosity and support of our Sacred Heart trustee Pablo Stalman, a native Argentine. We are so grateful to learn and be immersed in the country, customs, and culture during our 10 days there. Both SHU admissions and athletics will have a presence while we are in Buenos Aires and are looking forward to representing and showcasing Sacred Heart with pride and gratitude both on and off the court."
After arriving in Buenos Aires on Sunday morning, the Pioneers will do some sightseeing around the city before going on a bike tour to the Plaza de Mayo, the historical heart of the city, on Monday. Tuesday will feature a walking tour of the Puerto Madero neighborhood and the team's first game of the trip against the Argentinian National Team.
On Wednesday, SHU will visit the La Boca neighborhood, Buenos Aires' historical Little Italy, before their second exhibition against the Argentina National Team during the evening. Thursday, August 16 will feature a full day of entertainment with horseback riding, a traditional asado barbeque, gaucho music and dancing as the team visits the grassy plains of La Pampa.
The weekend of the 17-19th will feature several trips including the village of Tigre Town, the Cathedral of La Planta and the San Telmo district, which is known for its cafes, and antique markets. The weekend will be capped by a Sunday night game against Argentina's U-18 National Team. SHU will play its fourth and final game on the 10th day of the trip against Velez Sarsfield on Monday, August 20.
The team's final day of the trip will feature a catamaran ride to Uruguay and the village of Colonia, before returning to Argentina.
The women's basketball program went on its first-ever international tour to Ireland back in the summer of 2013. During the 10-day trip the team immersed itself in the Irish culture while enjoying many different adventures, including exploring the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney's Castle, the Waterford crystal factory, the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin and Sacred Heart's sister campus in Dingle. The Pioneers also won all four of their exhibition games against Irish teams.
