Mannetti Attends WBCA’s XCEL Head Coach Workshop

ATLANTA, Ga. – Sacred Heart University head women's basketball coach Jessica Mannetti was selected to participate in the XCEL Head Coach Workshop held by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association presented by FastModel Sports on Thursday, March 29, at the 2018 WBCA Convention in Columbus, Ohio.

Mannetti, who will enter her sixth season at the helm, was one of 20 NCAA Division I coaches in attendance. The attendees received a comprehensive and unique opportunity to enhance their WBCA Convention experience by participating in this half-day program offering an intensive, peer-learning environment. It brought together head coaches to discuss pertinent and relevant topics in the sport and business, as well as to provide an environment to share current challenges and find solutions in a small, more personal setting.

Mannetti began. "I was so grateful to receive an invitation from the WBCA to attend the Xcel Head Coach Workshop. The program immersed us in relevant and necessary conversations specific to head coach development like nothing else I've experienced. I would attend it every year if I could!"

The workshop focused on mental health, legal concerns affecting coaches, working with administrators, the challenges and opportunities of social media, discussing challenging and real social injustice with your team, and various technologies being used in practices and games.

"This program will allow the WBCA to help head coaches grow in areas off the court," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "The participants were able to develop themselves and their skills on a personal level in order to improve as a coach."

Stephen Graef, a sport psychologist at Ohio State, spoke on the topic of "Full-Court Press – The What, Why and How of Student-Athlete Mental Health." Courtney Banghart, head coach at Princeton; Sandy Barbour, director of athletics at Penn State; David Benedict, director of athletics at Connecticut; Vicky Chun, vice president and director of athletics at Colgate; and Jennifer Strawley, deputy director of athletics and senior woman administrator at Miami; served as a panel to cover the topic of "Being the Best CEO While Managing Up." Janet Judge, a partner at Holland & Knight LLP, presented on "Legal Issues That Women's Basketball Coaches Face."

WBCA board members Lisa Fortier, head coach at Gonzaga; and Lindsay Gottlieb, head coach at California, helped facilitate the event.

The Pioneers finished the 2017-18 regular season 13-16 and 9-9 in the Northeast Conference entering the conference tournament as the fourth seed. SHU knocked off no. 5 Bryant in the quarterfinal matchup before falling to the league's top contender, Saint Francis U. The squad graduated lone senior Tykera Carter and will look to capitalize on where it left off earlier this year.

Mannetti ended. "I am excited to be heading out recruiting this weekend on the hunt for some new Pioneers and confidently armed with a broader perspective. Huge thanks to the WBCA for an outstanding program"
